Under the new rule, food delivery services will have some flexibility in how they pay new workers. 'Given the broken process that resulted in such an extreme final minimum pay rule, we will continue to explore all paths forward - including litigation - to ensure we continue to best support Dashers and protect the flexibility that so many delivery workers like them depend on,' DoorDash said in a statement. Meanwhile, DoorDash said it may pursue legal action. Grubhub, which noted it believes the city 'had good intentions,' also expressed disappointment and similar concerns over the rule. 'The city is lying to delivery workers - they want apps to fund this increase by eliminating jobs and reducing tipping while forcing the remaining workers to deliver orders faster,' Uber Eats spokesperson Josh Gold said. While Guallpa and others applauded New York's new minimum pay rate, food delivery services including Uber Eats and DoorDash have pushed back - arguing that the decision could have unintended consequences on app workers. 'While there's still work to do, a minimum pay rate for food delivery workers will transform the lives of thousands of families across the city and deliver long overdue justice for deliveristas.' 'This rule will set the pay floor for all the essential deliveristas who work tirelessly - whether through a pandemic, a snowstorm or wildfire smoke - and who have been denied a living wage for far too long,' Gullapa said in a statement. Ligia Guallpa, executive director of the Brooklyn-based Worker's Justice Project, called the move a 'historic moment for New York City' - as labor organizers across the country call for better pay and improved working conditions for gig workers, who often face unreliable earnings and little safety protections. It took authorities there 43 days to replace it, Schofer said. In Atlanta, an elevated portion of Interstate 85 collapsed in a fire, shutting down the heavily traveled route through the heart of the city in March 2017. “Now that’s almost a miracle,” Schofer said. In California, a similar situation happened with a highway ramp in Oakland. “You can’t go online to Amazon and order it and have it delivered the next day,” said Schofer, who also hosts a podcast on infrastructure. Schofer, a retired professor of civil and environmental engineering from Northwestern University, said a big challenge for PennDOT in quickly replacing the bridge could be getting heavy-duty steel beams of a hundred feet or more.Įnsuring the precise length necessary - either by finding the construction records or taking measurements - and finding a fabricator to make them could take time, he said. Shapiro, a Democrat, said the complete rebuild of I-95 would take “some number of months,” and in the meantime officials were looking at “interim solutions to reconnect I-95 and get traffic through the area.” PennDOT rated the 104-foot span as in “good” condition earlier this year, with another inspection set for 2025. The collapsed section of I-95 was part of a $212 million reconstruction project that wrapped up four years ago, state Transportation Department spokesman Brad Rudolph said. It could have been coated in a fire-retarding paint, but even then the beams could have been weakened.Īmong many transportation changes across the region, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority said it was operating three extra morning and late afternoon trains on its Trenton, New Jersey, line, and adding capacity to regularly scheduled lines during peak hours following the collapse. Bridges like the one that collapsed don’t typically have fire protection, like concrete casing, he added. High heat from the fire or the impact of an explosion could have weakened the steel beams supporting the overpass, according to Drexel University structural engineering Professor Abi Aghayere. He said a flight he took over the area showed “just remarkable devastation.” Shapiro signed a disaster declaration Monday, saying it gives state agencies the ability to skip normal bidding-and-contracting requirements so the span can be repaired faster. Pennsylvania State Police said a body was turned over to the Philadelphia medical examiner and coroner, but did not identify the remains or respond when asked if they belonged to the driver.Ĭarroll said the highway span was 10 to 12 years old, had appeared sound, and officials blamed the damage on the heat of the fire, which took about an hour to control. The driver was feared dead, and a relative of a New Jersey truck driver who has not been heard from since Sunday told The Philadelphia Inquirer that investigators had contacted the family in an effort to identify human remains recovered from the wreckage. In the first official accounting of a wreck that threw hundreds of thousands of morning commutes into chaos and disrupted untold numbers of businesses, state Transportation Secretary Mike Carroll said the driver was northbound “trying to navigate the curve, lost control of the vehicle, landed on its side and ruptured the tank.” PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The driver of a tractor-trailer hauling gasoline lost control on an off-ramp and flipped the tanker truck on its side in a wreck that set it afire and destroyed a section of the East Coast’s main north-south highway, Pennsylvania’s top transportation official said Monday. ![]() ![]() The goal of this week is to raise awareness about the contributions of radiologic technologists, and how they help patients receive accurate diagnoses and quality care. When they read, the books doesn’t make sense to them because the sentences are structured the way THEY would say them. They can’t get their ideas across effectively because they have disorganized language. Our students have a poor sense of sentence structure One of our first steps to helping improve our students’ syntax is defining the biggest problems. The majority of this guide to writing syntax goals for speech therapy comes directly from this article (although you’ll see me cite a number of other sources as well). Unraveling difficult sentences: Strategies to support reading comprehension, Intervention in School and Clinic 2017, 52, 218–227. This article was also reviewed by Erickson Education Consulting in June 2017 as well in a blog post series. cleared up some confusion with an article he wrote in Intervention in School and Clinic. I came across it on Smart Speech Therapy’s Facebook page back in April of 2017 in this post. It can also make our therapy more effective, because we’re hitting the skills holding them back in the first place. If we’re aware of the biggest culprits behind their processing difficulties, this can narrow our focus considerably. Part of the reason I’m giving you the IEP goal bank at the end of the series is so I can make sure you know the high-priority skills first. That’s why for syntax, its necessary to examine the types of sentences that are MOST difficult to process, because these are the ones that will give our students with language impairments the biggest headaches. We don’t have time to get to them all, nor do we need to. If your students are struggling with sentence structure, the list of error patterns they make can seem endless. But I’ll still give it to you just in case you need it □īefore we dive in to how exactly we should write syntax goals for speech therapy, we need to prioritize. To be honest, I hope to give you enough information about syntax goals that you won’t need an IEP goal bank. I’ll even promise what you could call an “IEP Goal Bank” for syntax that will come at the very end of the series. If you have this problem too, you’ll want to keep reading, because his post is the beginning of a five-article series for SLPs called Syntax Goals for Speech Therapy. I was using all kinds of complex sentence structures because I intuitively knew how and when to use them…but I didn’t have the ability to explain what I was doing. It’s that I knew them so well IMPLICITLY, that I couldn’t explain them EXPLICITLY, which was what my students needed. ![]() It’s not that I didn’t “know” them in the sense that I wasn’t able to communicate effectively. Well for me at least, I found it hard to teach syntactic results because I didn’t know them myself. Yet it can be really hard to write syntax goals for speech therapy even if we’re using some type of IEP goal bank. If we don’t understand sentence structure, the sentences we say will be pretty disorganized. We won’t be able to understand sentences when we’re reading or heading them if we don’t understand how they’re put together. This makes perfect sense if you think about it. ![]() Their reading and writing skills may be poor, and they struggle to follow directions.Īs it turns out, this is no coincidence, because syntactic skills are proven to be correlated with reading and listening comprehension skills (Scott, 2009 Westby, 2012). Maybe something sounds “off”, disorganized, or incomplete…but you can’t figure out what’s wrong? If you struggle to write syntax goals for speech therapy, what you’re about to read will make your life substantially easier (spoiler alert: it involves a mini-IEP goal bank).ĭo you have students who can’t get their ideas across and don’t “sound right” when they’re talking? ![]() |
